Japanese Club is a popular, unique offering at Prairie Hills Elementary. It is sponsored by Mrs. Cervera and Mrs. Klancke who both attended month-long Japan study tours and have other connections to Japan and its culture. Japanese Club is a hands-on class with numerous fun learning activities. Students make Japanese crafts, learn to write some words in Japanese, eat Japanese foods, listen to Japanese folktales and study many different aspects of Japanese culture and geography. Older students (grade 2 -5) in this club also do more activities, such as learning basic skills to create a manga (comic book) character and use their creativity to make an artistic obento snack that is pleasing to the eye. Participants receive "souvenirs" and also take home their notebook and crafts.
