Hello and welcome to Prairie Hills Elementary! I’m Mark Mitchell and I’m super excited to be working alongside you to help make this an amazing year for your child.
A little bit about me; I have been married to my amazing wife Julie for just over 16 years. We have 4 children, ages 5 to 12 years old. Ethan is going into his 7th grade year at Rocky Top, Brooklyn, Jackson, and Gavin will all be with me here at PHE. Brooklyn is going into 5th grade, Jackson is going into 2nd grade and Gavin is going into Kinder. My wife and I are both originally from California, but now are happy to call Colorado "home". We enjoy the outdoors and spending time together as a family, with friends and serving in our church. Some things I personally love are technology, fly fishing and backpacking.
My journey to teaching began 9,360 miles away in the small country of Malawi, Africa. I had always known I wanted to work with children. However, teaching wasn't what I was expecting. With no teaching degree and only being married for 3 months my wife and I moved to Malawi where I taught 3rd grade. At the end of that year, I knew this was what I wanted to do in life. We moved back to the States (Flagstaff, AZ) where I finished my undergraduate and graduate degree in elementary education. I am very excited to be teaching 3rd grade at Prairie Hills Elementary this year! This is my 11th year teaching here in Adams 12 and my 7th year here at Prairie Hills.
One of my passions in teaching is technology. I try to incorporate it into a lot of what we do. One of the main pieces of technology I use is the Google Classroom. The majority of our assignments in reading and writing take place in this format. Here is a basic video (coming soon) on how to access and navigate your child's Google Classroom should you need any assistance.
It’s extremely important to me that here in the classroom we have a safe, respectful environment so that all students can learn and grow. We have somewhat of a new focus this year with our LARKS. Or focus will be PRIDE (perseverance, respect, integrity, dreams to achieve and empathy). While the language has shifted some, the overall desire for our students has not.
I will be putting together a monthly newsletters that will be posted on my website. This will keep you informed of important information like upcoming dates, field trips and academics as well as what parents can be doing at home to continue the learning that happens here at school.
It is my desire to have open and honest communication; therefore, please do not hesitate to contact me (email is best) with any questions or concerns that you have in regards to your child.
I’m super excited about this upcoming school year and I can’t wait to get started!
